How to Create a Hard Drive Partition in Windows

Welcome to BasanzieTech!

Today, I will guide you step by step on how to create a partition on your computer's hard drive if you are using the Windows operating system.

When you purchase a new computer, it usually comes with a single hard drive partition. This partition contains both your operating system (OS) and all your personal data. Although this may seem convenient, it is not the best option for data security.

Here’s why:

If your operating system becomes corrupted, you may lose your personal files because they are stored in the same partition as the system files.

Separating system files from personal files helps improve data organization, security, and backup management.

To address this issue, you can create separate partitions on your hard drive. For example:

  • One partition can store the Windows operating system and installed software.

  • Another partition can store your documents, pictures, music, and other personal files.

Now, let’s go through the steps to create a new partition in Windows.

Step 1: Open Disk Management

On your desktop, go to This PC (or My Computer in older Windows versions).

Right-click This PC and select Manage.

A new window called Computer Management will open.

Step 2: Access Disk Management

On the left side of the Computer Management window, locate the Storage section.

Click Disk Management.

You will now see a list of all the partitions on your computer, including the system partition (usually C:) and any other available drives.

Step 3: Shrink an Existing Partition

Choose the partition you want to split, usually the C: drive.

Right-click the selected partition and choose Shrink Volume.

A pop-up window will appear, prompting you to specify the amount of space to shrink.

Enter the amount of space you want to allocate to your new partition in MB.

For example, to create a 100 GB partition, enter 102400 MB (since 1 GB = 1024 MB).

Click Shrink.

Once the process is complete, a new section labelled Unallocated Space will appear in Disk Management.

Step 4: Create a New Partition (Volume)

Right-click the Unallocated Space.

Select New Simple Volume.

The New Simple Volume Wizard will open. Follow these steps:

  1. Click Next.

  2. Enter the size of your new partition. You can use the maximum available size.

  3. Assign a drive letter, such as D: or E:.

  4. Enter a volume label, such as Data, or leave the default name as New Volume.

  5. Choose the file system. NTFS is recommended.

  6. Click Finish.

Step 5: Verify the New Partition

Once the wizard finishes, your new partition will be created and displayed in This PC alongside your existing drives.

You will now see two or more partitions.

You can begin using the new partition to store your personal files separately from your Windows system files.

Conclusion

Creating partitions is one of the best ways to organize your data. If your operating system becomes corrupted and you need to reinstall Windows, your personal files stored on another partition may remain safe, provided that partition is not affected or formatted during the process.

By following the steps above, you can easily create additional partitions on your computer without using third-party software.

Now you have learned how to create a new partition on a Windows computer. I recommend keeping at least two partitions: one for the operating system and another for your personal data.

Thank you very much!
